Dehydration Treated by Continuous Gastric Drip

چکیده
The problem of the dehydrated patient is a very real one, and dehydration occurs far more commonly than is realized, particularly in tropical and sub-tropical countries. The normal daily fluid loss from the body in a temperate climate, through the lungs, skin, urine and faeces, is approximately 4? pints. In hot countries the urine output is lower, but evaporation Jrom the skin is greatly increased and the daily total loss is 6 pints or more. Loss of fluid from the body continues even if there is

In an earlier communication (Aldridge, 1941) attention was drawn to the fact that in addition to water loss in dehydration in infancy, there is loss of electrolytes which may alter the acid base balance of the blood, and that oliguria may play a part in producing the condition. Treatment of dehydration is, therefore, designed to deal with these three factors: to this end fluid in excess of norm...

Diarrhea-induced dehydration is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old [1]. Most of these deaths occur in the developing world. Severe dehydration is treated with intravenous (IV) therapy. One risk of IV therapy is over-hydration, which can to lead to severe complications and death. In the developed world, infusion pumps are commonly used to regulate the delivery of ...

Aquaporin (AQP) water channel proteins play key roles in water movement across cell membranes. Extending previous reports of cryoprotective functions in insects, this study examines roles of AQPs in response to dehydration, rehydration, and freezing, and their distribution in specific tissues of the Antarctic midge, Belgica antarctica (Diptera, Chironomidae). When AQPs were blocked using mercur...

BACKGROUND This study compared an intermittent feeding regimen (one-sixth of daily needs infused every 4 hours) with a continuous (drip) feeding regimen for critically ill trauma patients. There were two outcome variables: time to reach goal volume and the days on 100% of caloric needs via an enteral route in the first 10 days of the intensive care unit stay. Adverse events were also tallied. ...

It is in this respect that our professional ...
